Emergency Care

We would like our patients to know how to recognize problems which may occur with their orthodontic appliances and to understand how to solve them until it is convenient to return to the office. Please do not hesitate to call us with any questions or concerns.

Problems

Solutions

Loose band or bracket Keep band or bracket clean; call the office
for re-cementation appointment as soon as possible. If left loose, food could become trapped between the band/bracket and the tooth causing decalcification of the enamel.
Loose or broken wire Try to place the wire into the bracket or band with tweezers. If this is not possible, use wax or sugarless chewing gum to hold the wire in place and call for an appointment.
Sharp spot or sticker Attempt to push the sticker down with a dull object like the end of a spoon or a pencil eraser. If this is not possible, cover with wax and call for an appointment.
Lost tie-wire or elastic tie This is not a “real” emergency, but should be replaced whenever it is convenient to return to the office.
Headgear, lip bumper or other removable appliance does not fit properly DO NOT WEAR. Call for an appointment
Accidents involving the teeth An appointment should be scheduled in our office as soon as possible to evaluate any injury. (If we are not available, contact your general dentist or emergency room.)

CHECK YOUR APPLIANCES EACH TIME YOU BRUSH TO IDENTIFY
PROBLEMS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
